Colonial Indian culture

During British colonial rule in India. The British brought in the English language, and education system, a post office, trains and a honest government. The Indian people used their English-language and their newfound education to educate themselves on how they were being oppressed. The Indians started a newspaper and began to speak with each other about their feelings of oppression. Educated Indians could help educate other Indians on how to change their political situation. All of this was brought on by British rule and their desire to educate and take over the Indian country.

Gandhi said “nonviolence is the first article of my faith. It is also the last article of my creed” Gandhi believed that India should be independent of Britain. He worked in South Africa. Another British colony as a lawyer and he was discriminated against their. He resolved to fight using nonviolent resistance. He organized protest against racism and unjust laws in South Africa. He then returned to India and organized civil disobedience against British rule there.

Tagore was a Renaissance man and a poet, novelist, musician and artist. He was devoted to the culture of India, but believed in balance between Western and ancient customs. The British colonizers like him as well. He promoted, pride international Indian consciousness in the face of British domination.

Both of these men helped India gained their independence. Tagore made the British people realize that they were doing the wrong thing and Gandhi showed them that 30,000,000 people organizing civil disobedience against British rule could be very powerful and when they work together. They won India’s independence.
