-1 What is John Winthrop's message to the Puritans as they are about to land in the New World?

John Winthrop is telling the group that they need to work together as a community are out they will not survive in the new world. He believes that sharing each other's work will make the hard transition to the new and easier. John Winthrop believes they are all going to share the same experience and the experience can be whenever they make advanced. They could be wonderful if they all work together and make it wonderful or horrible as they all go after their own goals and don't help each other.

-2 What do you like or not like about Winthrop’s message?

“when tenn of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies” I like this becauseI think this means is even if you believe in something different you should not feel weird or bad because your 10 people who think that versus the 1000 people who think different then yourself. I do not like how he says “enemies” because why would a different thinking be an considered an enemy. I believe he thinks that if they stick together as they can seem like a bigger mass of people then they really are. The only thing about Winthrop's message I don't like is his reasoning for working together. He believes that God will punish them if they don't work together add-ons think that's a very good reason to work together I think you should do it because it's the right thing to do.

-3 According to Winthrop what values make for a successful society?

“wee must be knitt together in this worke as one man, wee must entertaine each other in brotherly Affeccion, wee must be willing to abridge our selves of our superfluities, for the supply of others necessities” in other words, they must be united together in this work as one community with a common goal. They must be willing to sacrifice for each other for the glory of God. In a successful society there is no one there is only everybody and everybody is equal. The sadness of one man is the sadness of everybody and if they were together they can achieve anything.

-4 What one word or phrase that Winthrop used best summarizes the entire speech? Why?

Winthrop uses the word “community” in his speech. I believe it best summarizes the entire speech because a group of people not working together is just a mob that a group of people with common goals working together is like a family or community. He's trying to tell them that if they only think about themselves they will all fail. Any community everybody has a job and everyone work together for common interests.
